Freeze dryers are an important air system component where dry compressed air is required. The compressed air passes through an air-to-refrigerant heat exchanger, reducing the compressed air temperature to typically 3°C/37°F. This causes water vapor in the air to condense into a liquid, which is eventually removed.
The cold dryer has its own refrigeration compressor, which can compress the refrigerant gas into a liquid state. Traditional refrigerant air dryers usually use a fixed speed piston compressor. From an energy efficiency standpoint, this leads to the same “on or off” disadvantage of fixed speed air compressors. In contrast, inverter refrigeration dryers use a scroll compressor with a helical element running around a second stationary element. It has a compact structure and low noise, and the frequency converter driving the vortex element can change the speed according to the demand, thus saving energy.
